Lux Style Awards 2013: Style Supplement’s Best Dressed List

Left for a five day trip to north on the next day of Lux Style Awards where there was no cell coverage let alone Internet access so couldn’t cover LSAs on the blog. But I believe in a policy of ‘late better than never’ so here’s my two cents on 12th Lux Style Awards Red Carpet.
LSAs were held in Lahore this year so as expected, red carpet was full of glitz and glamour. Shehla Chatoor dominated the red carpet as most of the stars were spotted wearing her pieces. Élan, Sania Maskatiya and Deepal Perwani were some of the other designers spotted.
As for the celebrities, Mahira Khan was clearly best dressed of the night in a dress from Élan by Khadijah Shah’s latest collection. I was rooting for that dress to make it the red carpet and there was no one better than Mahira to pull it off.

Best Dressed:

Amina Sheikh and Ali Xeeshan were declared best dressed male and female on the red carpet by the jury.

If it were me, I wouldn’t have chosen her as best dressed but she does look great and I can get behind the idea but it is the best dressed male award that I cant wrap my head around.

Ali Xeeshan

He looks like a pirate who borrowed a suit from his cousin in Toba Tek Singh to attend LSAs. The fit is bad, shirt seems ruffled and pants need hemming. No idea who was on the jury that selected him as best dressed but I am pretty sure they have no idea how the fuck menswear works. (sorry for using profanity but I am quite flabbergasted)

StyleSupplement’s Best Dressed:

As for my personal favourites, let’s start with the men. I think there were tons of men who looked far better (and saner) than Ali Xeeshan but if I had to pick one I would choose model Waleed Khalid as the best dressed male on the red carpet.

Waleed Khalid r (FILEminimizer)

I am not sure whom he’s wearing but it looks like HSY. Camel colour, narrow tie and that white peeking pocket square wins it for me. This look is so GQ appropriate which I consider a style bible.

Nubain Ali, Hamza Tarrar and Shehzad Noor (who won Best Fashion Model [Male]) would come second on my list. Kamiar Rokni looked good too.

As for the ladies, to me Mahirah Khan was hands down the best dressed female on the red carpet. Not only her Elan by Khadijah Shah dress was gorgeous but she pulled it off perfectly.

Feeha Jamshed in a canary yellow gown and Amna Illyas in black Shehla Chatoor dress would come second.

I really liked Humaima’s choice as well but it was a bit too obvious. Spectacular nonetheless.

Lux Style Awards 2013 Nominations: The hot contenders

Lux-Style-Awards-2012

Now that Lux Style Awards nominations are out, speculations as to who is hot favourite in each category have started. Everyone is predicting winners and vouching for their personal favourites. Here are my two cents on the matter:

Model of the Year (Female)

Amna Ilyas

Ayyan

Cybil Chowdhry

Mehreen Syed

Rabia Butt

Nominations are exactly similar to last year’s. My personal favourites in this category are Cybil and Rabia Butt. They have got looks, they have been consistent and have amazing persona. Both have been doing very well both on runway and in photo shoots. If anyone can challenge them, it’s Amna Ilyas and I see this one going to her. She has really made her presence felt in 2012 and now stands as one of country’s top model at the moment. Here petite figure and dusky complexion gives her an extra edge. My prediction is that Amna Ilyas will be taking the trophy home this year though you still cant rule out possibility of any of the other nominees taking this one home.

Model of the Year (Male)

Abbas Jafri

Ather Amin

Jahan-e-Khalid

Shehzad Noor

Waleed Khalid

My personal favourite is Shehzad Noor but Waleed Khalid seems to be the most likely winner. As for last year’s winner Abbas Jafri, frankly speaking at this point I am a bit tired of his looks.

Best Fashion Photographer

Azeem Sani

Fayyaz Ahmed

Guddu Shani

Nadir Feroz

Rizwan ul Haq

I want to see Nadir Feroz winning this one, he has done some amazing work in 2012 and was definitely designer’s favourite. Guddu Shani could challenge him.

Best Hair and Make-up Artist

Creative Team at Nabila

Creative Team at Tariq Amin

Juju Haider & Shammal Quraishi at Toni&Guy, Lahore

Maram Azmat & Abroo Hashmi

Raana Khan

Hands down, this one should go to Juju Haider & Shammal Quraishi at Toni&Guy, Lahore; they have soared to amazing heights in a matter of no time and quality of their work is par excellence.  Maram Azmat & Abroo Hashmi lacks the finesse while Raana Khan isn’t as strong as other nominees. Nabila and Tariq Amin are the gurus but it’s time someone else wins this category.

Achievement in Fashion Design – Luxury Pret

Shehla Chatoor

Iman Ahmed at Body Focus

Khadija Shah at Elan

Maheen Karim

Sania Maskatiya

Shehla Chatoor is definitely the strongest of above five in luxury pret category. Her evening wear has a signature of its own and she has a very strong and loyal client base who always ensure good coverage for her. Elan by Khadijah Shah would be her strongest competition.

Achievement in Fashion Design – Pret

Feeha Jamshed

Iman Ahmed at Body Focus

Sanam Chaudhry

Sania Maskatiya

Wardha Saleem

A very talented and young lot of designers but no one can boast of both strong retail presence and supremacy of design like Sania Maskatiya can, this one’s definitely hers for the taking.

Best Menswear Designer

Ahmed Bham

Amir Adnan

Ammar Belal

Ismail Farid

Republic by Omar Farooq

Menswear has been quite a disappointing affair in 2012 and this is reflected in the nominations. Last year’s winner Republic is strongest of the lot but he hasn’t been very active in last year. Ammar Belal moved to New York last year and has been absent, don’t remember the last time I saw anything by Ismail Farid making the news. Ahmed Bham has a long way to go. Never been an Amir Adnan fan, he might have the stores across the country but all he does is make sherwanis and kurtas which works well for him but don’t think is enough to qualify to win an award.

Achievement in Fashion Design – Lawn

Khaadi by Khaadi

Mahnoush by Arjumand Amin

Orient by Deepak Perwani

Sana Safinaz by Sana Hashwani & Safinaz Muneer

So Kamaal by Elan

Sana Safinaz are the most likely winners but my vote will go to Elan by Khadijah Shah, her last year’s lawn was one of the best of the season. She has intoduced some great diversity to designer lawn category and has made quite a mark for herself.

Best Emerging Talent

Misha Lakhani (Women’s wear designer)

Abdullah Haris (Photography)

Natasha’s Salon (Hair & Make Up Artist)

Saima Azhar (Modeling)

Sana Sarfaraz (Modeling)

I am torn between Misha Lakhani and Abdullah Haris on this one. Both have done amazing work in 2012. Abdullah Haris is a creative genious and never compromises on his craft while Misha Lakhani has established a niche for herself in no time. If I had to predict a winner I would chose Misha Lakhani, Abdullah Haris might be a bit to too arty for judges taste and his lack of commercial appeal might not play in his favour. His work is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Lux Style Awards 2012: Green Carpet, the Girls

All female celebrities from Mathira and Ayaan to Amina Sheikh wore some very unfortunate things to the Green Carpet, while the male celebrities shone more than ever, ladies took it upon themselves to give us fashion bloggers something to rant about.

All wasn’t bad however, while the celebrities were fashion faux pas, it was non-celebrities like editor Andleeb Rana Farhan, event manager Frieha Altaf who brought the glamour. It was journalists and editors who saved the day and as fashion journalist Aamna Haider Isani tweeted “Fashion journalists are still the best dressed people” and it stood correct more than ever.

Let’s have a look at what everyone wore:

HITS:

Although there were more misses than hits but there were still some looks worthy of praise.

Asma Mumtaz:

Let’s start with one of the few better dressed people from that night.

Wearing a cream coloured HSY gown with bejeweled shoulders, Celebrity stylist Asma Mumtaz looked like a million bucks. Hair and makeup were done to perfection. HSY might not be an expert when it comes to Avant Garde and fashion forwardness but still nobody does old school, conventional glamour like him.

Andleeb Rana Farhan:

Xpoze’ Monthly’s Editor-in-Chief wore a Sadaf Malaterre liquid gold dress with exaggerated sleeves. Every inch of that dress exuded glamour and glitz and was a perfect dress for the evening. Heel-less strappy sandals are a welcome respite from the towering pumps one sees every girl wearing on the red carpet.

Mahira Khan:

Mahira was wearing a light teal full length dress by her best friend Feeha Jamshed, inclusion of heavy necklace wass a very nice touch. Mahira certainly knows her fashion and this whole ensemble might not be the head turner but it has that understated chicness to it that one knows Mahira for and associates with Feeha Jamshed’s brand.

Frieha Altaf:

LSA’s producer and Catwalk Production’s Frieha Altaf was a vision in a very well draped Maheen Karim dress. The dress is immaculately constructed and the texture is divine.

Meera:

In a short dress by Sadaf Malaterre, Meera looked better than ever. Say what you may like about this girl but she always look amazing and her hair and makeup were spot on and she looked glamourous enough without heading into tackyville, wait till you see Mathira and you will know what I am talking about 😀

MISSES:

Mathira:

Mathira topped the worst dressed list, while her Ali Xeeshan dress was nothing short of disaster, her terrible hair and drag queen makeup made it worse. That dress has an interesting print but those tacky butterfly brooches and the shiny effect of print is ruining it. Dress is shapeless and her face is a whole another story.

Whats killing me the most is that Ali Xeeshan is such a talent with some amazing creations to his credit, why o why did they (or she) chose that hideousness?

Ayaan:

Ayaan was the other major casualty of the day, wearing a Deepak Perwani purple mermaid tail gown, she was one sore sight. The dress did no justice to her magnificent  beauty. Hair and makeup were equally bad.

Amina Sheikh:

Amina Sheikh is one of the most beautiful women of this industry and has got an ethereal and seductive persona. She is usually very well dressed, infact her Fahad Hussayn gown at last year’s Lux Style Awards was one of the best of that event but her attire this year left us high and dry. Her gold Maheen Karim dress was all over the place bearing no shape or pattern, proportions were all wrong too. The blouse was interesting but rest of the dress just got too complex for its own good.

Lux Style Awards 2012: Green Carpet, The Boys

So, they rolled out a Green carpet instead of the usual Red at 11th Lux Style Awards. The concept was first improvised at IIFA and Lux followed the trend, we don’t care what colour a carpet is as far the celebrities walking on it are dressed to their nines.

Green Carpet was filled with some very unfortunate fashion choices and some celebrities (read Mathira) were a walking case of fashion faux pas. While the girls were not exactly dressed to impress, the boys at Lux Style Awards Green Carpet were looking sharper and suaver than ever before. Lets take a look:

Ali Zafar:

Wearing a Republic by Omar Farooq two-piece suit with a wide leather lapel, one-button blazer and black textured tie, fabric of his suit was very fine and spoke for itself. His black suit was a major win win and in such an event where majority of men do a black suit this is how you stand out among others while still wearing a black suit. It shows the tremendous upholding of quality and excellence that Omar Farooq has shown with his band Republic. Cant express how much I love the lapel and the fine fabric, way to go.

Umair Tabani:

And here’s Umair Tabani, brother of designer Sania Maskatiya and business savvy manager behind her very successful and popular brand. Umair is wearing a tux by Republic and walked away with the Best Dressed Male prize, he looks very suave and debonair and his good looks helps too. We approve 😀

Kamiar Rokni:

Republic boys were out in full force that night, here’s Kamiar Rokni who donned a suit by Republic with a houndstooth lapel and a knitted tie, a very popular international trend right now. The combination’s very smart and tie provides a much needed dose of colour to the overall understated look.

Ali Safina:

Geo TV’s blue eyed boy and nominee in Best Actor category Ali Safina wore a suit by Arsalan and Yahseer and Giorgio Armani shoes. Geometric pattern on the blazer makes up a visually delighting sight but he is ruining the look with the very shiny tie and satin shirt, colour are all wrong too. Had he wore the same colours in a less shimmery fabric, it would have been perfect. Still credit for at least trying a local label instead of going for Zara or Ralph Lauren.

Tapu Javeri:

Ace photographer and always very well draped Tapu Javeri turned up in a black Balmain suit with a parrot green Christian Lacroix tie, talk about going French. As it is with black suits, they can very easily look monotonous and boring in an event like LSAs but pairing it up with such a jubilant looking tie made the difference here and he surely stood out from the rest of the crowd. Thumbs Up!

Omar Farooq:

And here’s the man himself with his beautiful wife. Omar Farooq is wearing a magenta tux and proving who’s the boss to all the boy stars when it comes to dressing.

His wife is looking equally chic in a Muse dress.

At the end of the day, all I can say is Thank God for Republic, God knows how much our male stars needed a man like him. Republic won a very well deserved award for Best Designer (Male) and LSA Green Carpet was itself a testimony to that man’s brilliance.

Lux Style Awards 2012 are here: Lowdown and inside scoop

So, Lux Style Awards are back with all their glitz and glamour, main event is going to be held on 10th July in Karachi. Amid, all the hype and buzz that is surrounding the event, biggest news to come out of it is the live coverage of the event, for the first time in 11 years, LSAs will be live webcasted and save one from the ordeal of waiting for the event’s television broadcast for months.

Link for live broadcast is here.

A lot of pre-event rumours about performers and attendees are surrounding the event. I went through tweets and blogs of some prominent journalists, editors and bloggers and here are few of the confirmed and unconfirmed information:

Biggest rumour making rounds as per Xpoze’ Editor-in-Chief’s sources is that Katrina Kaif is flying in for promotion of Lux for the main event, the rumour however remains unconfirmed.

Among other news, Ali Zafar and Mathira are confirmed performers, also BNN Boys will be attending too as per fashion journalist Aamna Haider Isani.

Event is being produced as per usual by Frieha Altaf of Catwalk Productions while PR is being managed by Catalyst PR.

Frieha Altaf has been sharing pictures form LSA rehearsals and going by them, other performers include Meera, Sana and singer Adil Omar.

For more details and minute by minute action from the event: follow fashion industry insiders Aamna Haider Isani, Muniba Kamal and Andleeb Rana Farhan on twitter.
