Trends to take home from London Collections: Men A/W 2015

(Published in Instep, The News on 25th January, 2015)

Paris and Milan fashion circles may be replete with mammoth names like Gucci, Prada and Corneliani but fashion and style runs way deeper among the Brits and is not only limited to red carpet glitz and runway showmanship.

The best thing about British fashion sensibility is its adaptability and street value; style is something that comes naturally to Brits and is discernibly distinctive, effortless and devoid of gimmicks. It is no surprise that some of the most fashion forward menswear high street brands (ASOS, River Island and Topshop to name a few) and celebrated menswear icons (David Gandy, Oliver Cheshire, Eddie Redmayne and Colin Firth) hail from good old England. Brits are undoubtedly mavens when it comes to street style and it is for this primacy that their bi-annual menswear showcase London Collections: Men is the most cutting edge and fashion forward stop in the menswear fashion week European circle that takes off from London and ends in Paris.

One could write endlessly about the fashion on display at LC:M A/W 2015 but there were certain palpable trends in the four day showcase that could be identified by their malleability and relevance with our local fashion climate.

And since our menswear style game is still run-off-the-mill and average at best parting few exceptions, here are a few trends from the London runway that are do-able, gel well with the social norm and will definitely give you an edge over rest of the straight fit-jeans and hoodie wearing crowd.

Most Stylish Men of The Year – 2014

Evolution of menswear style in Pakistan hasn’t been at par with womenswear but one can take respite in the fact that it is evolving though at a more sluggish pace then one would want it to.

2014 saw emergence of some delightful red carpet fashion in menswear department. While old guns continued their commendable performance in style department, a lot of new stars got a chance to shine as well thanks to more opportunities/awareness in general and a significant increase in red carpet appearance in particular.

Style Supplement takes a look at stars who were an absolute delight to watch on the red carpet and wowed everyone with their style quotient. Here’s the list of some of most stylish men on the red carpet.

6.Adnan Malik

Adnan Malik has been the most consistent of the stylish men lot. Whether it’s a fashion week red carpet or a simple, subtle launch, Adnan always dresses for the part. His blazers in particular have been slick, stylish and right on trend with their florals and windowpane patterns.

5. Kamiar Rokni

Dapper meets sporty is the best way to define Kamiar Rokni’s style. Whether its the slickly cut jackets, orange knitted tie or a punchy pocket square, he brings it every single time.

4. Shammal Qureishi

Simple and to the point. Mirrored aviators, flower lapel pin or a woven plaited belt; Shammal is very good at making minimalist, statement making details work.

3. Emaad Irfani

Whether its the HSY emblem jacket or a sharp two button suit, ex-model Emaad Irfani has always complimented his exceptionally good looks with equally stylish clothes.

2. Ammar Belal

Most experimental of the lot and a personal favourite, Ammar has been one to watch out for. It’s amazing how he make a t-shirt under suit look work so well. The double breasted electric blue blue jacket on the other hand is a collectibles item.

1. Fawad Khan

This was no-brainer. Fawad Khan shone on all fronts in 2014 whether it’s the silver screen or the big screen but it’s his red carpet looks that excited me the most. Fitted waistcoats, striking pocket squares, well tailored suits; he has undoubtedly been the most stylish male star of 2014.

9 Lines Outerwear Collection

I am a sucker for statement making, affordable fashion and 9 Lines is one brand that fits this description perfectly. I have become a huge fan of the brand since I have discovered it and my liking for the brand has simply increased with launch of their every new product line. Kitschy, fashion forward products which are quirky and peculiar; 9 Lines has perfected this signature and they are damn good at it.

There latest offering – faux leather jackets – is a fabulous and one of the best addition to their varied and colourful product range. Instead of yapping on about it, I will just leave you with some images from their winter-wear line and you will totally get what I am talking about.

Fawad Khan for Republic Fall/Winter 2014

Fawad Khan is the flavour of the month. He’s been everywhere not that I am complaining. No one is enjoying fashion world’s infatuation with Fawad Khan as much as I am. (Exhibit A)

So when recently images from Republic’s latest shoot featuring Fawad Khan came out, I couldn’t be more excited. Fawad Khan and Republic by Omar Farooq go quite a way back. (Exhibit B) Omar signed Fawad on as Reublic’s brand ambassador somewhere around at the start of this year. They weren’t able to shoot anything since Fawad was busy in India with shooting and promotion of his Bollywood flick ‘Khoobsurat’.

They have finally come out with a spread shot by amazingly talented Abdullah Haris. This spread features pieces from Republic’s Woolmark Show collection.

Fawad Khan for GQ India!

By now, it is a scientifically proven fact that Fawad Khan is not only the most handsome star out there but most stylish as well so when it was only befitting for GQ India to feature a special wedding wear spread with Fawad Khan at the helm of it.

The spread that came out about a week ago features Fawad Khan wearing best of celebrated Indian designers as well as esteemed European labels. Fawad Khan is doing total justice to all the looks. He looks just as dashing in a Sabyasachi waistcoat as he does in a Tom Ford blazer. Continue reading

Waist Coats – Not just for the old anymore!

There used to be a time when waistcoats were considered more of a middle-aged and older men attire but gone are those days thanks to a bunch of fashion-forward menswear brands who have managed to push the trend into younger lot. More and more fashion enthusiasts are sporting the waistcoat look now and looking better than ever.

Armani Menswear comes to Pakistan

With a burgeoning fashion industry, more and more local brands are opening shop across the country. However, reputed international brands have been reluctant to follow suit and their arrival hasn’t been as fast as one would expect. While some high street brands namely Mango, Nine West have opened outlets in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, none of the the high-end European or American design houses are yet to arrive officially in Pakistan.

Well, that lull is about to be broken as Sefam brings Armani menswear to Pakistan. Just to refresh, Sefam is the same company that is behind national powerhouses such as Bareeze, Kayseria, Leisure Club, Urban Culture, Rang Ja, Minnie Minors, Bareeze Men and Chinyere to name a few. In short, they are running a complete fashion empire across the country and some of the local brands fall under their umbrella and now they are taking matters to next level by bringing in famed Italian design house to the country.

Bareeze Man shows at Amsterdam Fashion Week and has a new online store!

Bareeze Man was the surprise package of PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week and one of the best things to happen to menswear in Pakistan in recent years. The brand is sailing steadily and has made quite a few headways since it’s debut at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week in April this year. (Read more here)

It just showed a collection at Amsterdam Fashion Week. It was a slightly altered version of its PFDC Collection. While pieces were mostly the same, it was styled quite differently from Bareeze Man’s last showing. Crisp, clean and clothes for a man of style; it was a sharp collection. Minuscule colour details and styling touches brought life to collection. To sum it up: it was good, wearable fashion, just what one expects from Bareeze Man.
